The Beautiful Game

Hooray! After over 30 hours of delightfully roomy, comfortable air travel (seriously, we will NOT be flying with that particular airline again!) and waiting around in various airports, we're in the very pretty (if a little chilly) town of Sheffield, with Kent's brother and sister-in-law. I didn't even get groped or interrogated by Customs, which was a relief, after watching a few episodes of Border Patrol before we left NZ! Added bonus: sunrise in Dubai was AWESOME, much as we'd been told, it was breathtaking! But seeing as Kent is such a perfectionist, he took photos of it on his proper camera (ie, the flash non-digital one, so we can't put it up here... but it really was one of the most beautiful things I've seen.

I had my first live football match experience today, Sheffield United v Crystal Palace... which wasn't too bad to start with, as I've at least heard of both teams. If Crystal Palace isn't the most ridiculous name for a team, I don't know what is... yes, I know it's a place name, but really!

Sheffield United didn't exactly put on the best performance in our honour - they lost 1-0, but it was lovely and warm while we were watching, or at least it would have been if we'd stayed home and seen it on the telly - but where's the fun in that? Instead we wrapped up toasty and warm and headed to Bramall Lane - I would have chanted with the locals, but I'm buggered if could understand what they we're yelling - although there was a charming man sitting near us who had some delightful things to say to the ref - I wonder if he kisses his mother with that mouth?

By the time the game finished about 3pm, there wasn't much daylight left - man, this English winter will take some getting used to, so we've spent the afternoon looking for a cheap car... no luck yet, but you can bet your life it will be pretty small.
Anyway, that's about all - Happy New Year!
